Interstate 70 is Missouri's "Main Street." According to 2020 Census data, 66% of Missourians live within 50 miles of Interstate 70. Researchers at Florida State University recently reported that the value of trade related activity generated annually by the entire stretch of I-70 is $49.4 billion. That's an average of $23.8 million per mile. With 250 miles in Missouri, that would equate to just under $6 billion annually in trade related activity.
Interstate 70 from Blue Springs to Columbia is congested. This 100-mile stretch carries 25,000 to 65,000 vehicles per day with two lanes in each direction. It provides access to Whiteman Air Force Base and the nation's 2nd largest rail hub (Kansas City.)
Interstate 70 is two lanes in each direction through Columbia a city of more than 125,000 people. It carries 43,000 to 69,000 vehicles per day. Expansion would provide better access to the University of Missouri and critical medical facilities.
Interstate 70 from Columbia to Wentzville carries 30,000 to 82,000 vehicles per day an provides access to the nation's 3rd largest rail hub (St. Louis.) According to the 2022 Missouri State Freight and Rail Plan, the section between Truxton and Warrenton carries the highest percentage of truck traffic of any roadway in the state.
Interstate 44 through Springfield carries two lanes of traffic in each direction. Springfield is a major metropolitan city with nearly 170,000 people. The region supports a large segment of the trucking industry in Missouri.
Interstate 44 from Highway 100 to Sullivan carries 29,000 to 65,000 vehicles per day. Expansion would benefit manufacturers along the corridor and provide greater access to Missouri S&T.
